Blog 38 - Monday, March 16, 2020

A week after March break, the COVID-19 virus has shut down the school for TWO (2) weeks minimum.  I know MOST of you are probably very happy to be away from school.

For the next two weeks, Mr. Katz will be hosting some video conferences with his classes and will still be expecting his students to complete their blogs, readings and assignments.  As Shakespeare once said "The show must go on!"

Could distance education (education without face to face interaction) be the wave of the future?
How do you think the TWO week shutdown will impact your school year?
Do you think the government acted too quickly to shut down the schools?
Did your family stock up on supplies including TOILET PAPER?

Explain.

  1. I think that distance education won't be a big part of the future yet but it will be used in cases and emergencies like this. I personally much rather being taught in person so I can ask questions a lot easier and faster. Online I feel like it's harder to learn and when I'm at home I have no motivation to do work. I think that the two week shut down won't have much impact but we'll just a little behind in our classes. All of my other classes didn't assign work and they aren't going too. I don't think the government acted too quickly on the shut down because it's a precaution and they are taking measures to reduce the amount of cases. My family just went to get a few necessary items from the grocery store. Our store still had almost everything including toilet paper so we aren't very worried about that.

  2. I think covid-19 will definitely change our school because this thing doesn't happen often and when it does it becomes very stressful for everyone. Distance education will be in our future and its on our way. After this, universities and college will take this into perspective and start teaching online. Personally, i think they should have shut down the schools earlier before it got this bad. My family didn't stock that much on food and other stuff because they don't think that they will get so bad that they have to close all the super markets but when they go out they always get toilet paper because most of the time there's nothing left so when we have the chance we gte some.

  3. I think distance education could be good but also has it's cons. On one hand, people will not be bullied as much, they can not get hurt physically, people's mental health would be better as they could do their work on their own time. I don't know how this will affect our school year. I don't really know what will happen. I don't think the government was to quick, I think they did the right thing so the virus doesn't spread as fast anymore. My family did not stock up on things. We have waited until today to go shopping as there were so many people out at the stores on the weekend and we wanted to wait until the shelves were restocked.

  4. I think that distance education could be included in the near future, but I don’t think it will replace normal classes because it got very chaotic. I think it would be helpful kids on vacation or kids that can’t go to school because of sickness, if they feel well enough. I think these next two weeks will negatively impact a lot of students because they won’t do the work given and fall behind. I don’t think this will happen to me, however, because I get very bored and end up doing work. I don't think the government was too quick to shut down schools because it is important to stop the spread of the coronavirus. My family didn’t stock up at first, because we knew that it was unnecessary but when we realized that all of the stores were sold out we wanted to make sure we actually had food, so we stocked up. We didn’t go crazy on the toilet paper, just enough to last 5 people 2 weeks.

  5. I think that distance education can be a good thing as well as a negative thing. It can be confusing when you're not face to face with your teacher, and a bunch of students on the same call can get chaotic sometimes. Then again, it allows us to stay occupied during these long two weeks, which most of us have no plans for. Yes, I think that government was right on acting so fast to close schools, because they don't want the virus to continue to grow and expand. I think that it was the right decision. Yes, my family stocked up on food this weekend so that we don't have to go out too much, but we did go crazy with stocking up.

  6. In my opinion, I don't think that distance education will be the wave of our future but, they might be used in other emergencies. I don't think that the 2 weeks off will affect the rest of the school year as much because teachers and students will probably not want to extend the year in the summer. No I think the government did the right thing to prevent the spreading of the virus. Finally, my family didn't stock up as much because in my opinion, people are overreacting about this whole thing and they shouldn't worry about it.

  7. I think that distance education could very possibly be used in the future very soon and that it has a lot of advantages to it, but it also carries a lot of disadvantages too. I think that this shutdown was extremely unnecessary and that it was a rash decision considering that schools are made of people that are young enough not to be lethally affected by the virus and that we only had about 300 confirmed cases before the school shut down. I think this really sucks because we might have to go to school three weeks in the summer. My parents went to the stores last Friday and bought over 1000$ worth of food and stuff.

  8. I don't think distance education will be a wave in the future for most. If there is a virus going around, or a student can't attend school often then distant education will be used. I think the 2 weeks we have off will affect the school year since teachers will try and give us more homework and tests in a shorter period of time. The government did the right thing to avoid spreading the virus. Lastly, my family did not stock up on things too much because they don't think they need to.

  9. Distance education is already a big part of today, with online college etc... I'm sure it will grow as time passes. for the 2 week shutdown, i'm sure that there will be no more ped days, Easter break will probably be canceled and for the left over time, we will make up for it in the summer. I think the school shut down is a necessary precaution since there are many people in one area. we had just done the groceries before the shut down, but I am quite eager to hear the news about people dying of hunger, sorry but you can't eat toilet paper.

  10. I think that distance education has advantages and could be used very often in the future. It is really handy right now since we are on break, but I don't think it could replace regular classes. Our zoom meeting today was chaotic and a bit confusing since not everyone was able to ask questions. I am really hoping that we don't have an extra two weeks of school in the summer because of this break. That would really suck. I think that the government made the right choice. Even though the virus isn't very dangerous for us, it could still be spread easily and it could be super dangerous for older people. My family did not stock up but we were actually running low on toilet paper and had to go to three different stores to find some.

  11. i do think distance education could be used in the future. this two week shutdown will have a big impact on our school year because we will miss a lot of things and we will miss out on learning what we need to for our upcoming exams. No i dont think they acted to fast cause i think the shutdown was very necassary and needed so that the virus doesnt spread even more. We did not go crazy on stocking up with toilet paper but we did buy a good amount.

  12. I do think that distance education could be used later on in life as some of my fellow classmates have said. This two week shutdown will have a big impact on the students in many different ways. For instance, we will be behind on numerous things such as new subjects to be taught as well as other things. I feel as if the government did not act to fast. In fact I think they should have closed schools much earlier because it was already a problem. My family and I did not stock up on a crazy amount of supplies because we already have enough.

  13. I think that education by AI, not distance education is the future. This is because AI can be made to tailor fit any child, while being thought by a human is ineffective to most styles of learning. And with AI, each student can learn the way they learn best. I think that the 2 week break will not effect the school year in any dramatic way. It'll just be an annoyance to most teachings, and forcing the students to cram for the final examinations. I think that the school board responded just in time. Another week could have wreaked havoc on everything. This is because the virus spreads exponentially faster. One infected person can spread, on avarge, the virus to 0.5 people a day. That means that in one week, one infected person can infect 16 people, which in turn will infect more. And no, we did not stock up on toilet paper because that is one of the most useless things to stock up on.

  14. I think that doing school online would be beneficial to the world. It could give school a new spin since it hasn't changed in the past 100 years. I do believe that this will only become worse in the future if we do not find a cure fast. School could be cancelled for the rest of the year just like Alberta did. I don't think that the government acted at the perfect moment because it was just getting bad when they cancelled school. My family just did groceries so we could have food for the week and we didn't really horde anything.

  15. I think that it is possible that distance education could be a thing as there are now so many problems to deal with in our lives. I think that this two week shutdown could affect the end of the year as they may make us come in extra ,and this could also affect work in classes, as you can cover a lot of work in two weeks. To be honest I think the government acted pretty quickly but I think that was good because now in Quebec the amount of cases is going up really fast so they wanted to take precaution. Yes we stocked up on food, toiletpaper, hand sanitizer, soap etc.

  16. I think that distance education can definitely be a thing in a few years because of all the changes that has been happening these past years. I think the two week shut down will impact the year because we will be falling behind in school work and not learning the materials that we need for the end of year exams. I think the government shut down school at the perfect time to try to stop the number of people that have the virus. After they shut the schools down the same day when the number of people infected went up a lot so it was really good timing. We stock up on paper towel, sanitizer, and soap. (we had enough toilet paper)

  17. I think that distance education could be a thing for the future, but if it does become education in the future, I think that it has to be greatly improved before it becomes the main way that we teach. When we were doing the video school on zoom last moday, it was very lagy and chaotic. Everything was hard to understand. I think that these two weeks that we spend at home wil greatt impact ourschool year becuasw we will have to retake these rwo weeks during the summer.

  18. I think class video calls are terrible and will never be a thing of the future, they are chaotic and a lot of the times it's hard to hear one another. I think that because of the two week shutdown we might have to do school in the summer to catch up on classes which I hope doesn't happen. I think the government did a good thing in shutting the schools down because the virus spreads quickly and students may get it and transmit it to the elderly and their grand-parents. My family did not stock up on supplies or toilet paper because we are not stupid.

  19. I think distance education could be a thing of the future as a lot of kids/teens really don't want to show up to school and would much rather start school later and be at home. I think that this 2 week break will probably take away our summer and I am quite upset about that. I think that the government went to slowly if anything, I think that we should've just had the entire month off rather than having 1 week on. Most of my family didn't really want to stock up but my mom decided to go on a grocery/toilet paper spree so we are pretty loaded.

  20. I think distance education is something that can be useful in the future and maybe they can do something where for example in a university classroom they will have a camera "livestreaming" it to people who cant attend because they are sick or something. I think the government did a good job on shutting the schools down immediately but they might make it last until the end of the year. my family didn't panic-buy toilet paper and groceries but we did buy a bit only because we needed it.

  21. I do think that distance education could be a part of the future because there are now many apps that help us do online classes and in the future, the quality of the apps will definitely improve making them less glitchy. Although I do hope that in the future we don’t have online school ( unless it’s an emergency) because it’s not fun and sometimes hard to understand what the teacher is teaching. Also it will just make future generations even more lazy which is not a good thing. Another reason I don't want online schools to be a big part of the future is that there wouldn’t be gym classes and music class. I think the two weeks of shutdown will definitely impact our school year since we have school in the summer and it will be hard to catch up and get back in the routine once school starts again. I don’t think that the government acted too quickly to shut down schools because there would’ve been more cases of the coronavirus since it would’ve been spreading even more since more people would have been coming in contact with other people. My family did stock up a little when they found out that products were running out at the stores although we didn’t stock up on toilet papers because we already had enough.

  22. I don't think that online education is the best because their is a lot of noise in the background and on my screen I couldn't hear the teacher talking because it kept on lagging out and everyone wanted to ask questions and it was all a disaster. I think that they will just take out some ped days and make the year a little longer but I don't think that it will be much worse. I think that the government did a good thing on shutting down the schools because now we have less of a chance of catching the virus because we are not in a school with around 1000 people in it that one person can make the whole school have it. As soon as my mom knew that the government was shutting off the schools the next day she went and bought a lot of food that some of it we can't even fit in our closet where our food is

  23. I think that distance education could be a part of our future one day because with technology it isn't difficult to contact someone without having to see them so going to school wouldn't be necessary. But I think that the classes would have to be a lot smaller because in a class of twenty or thirty kids it would be way too loud and confusing to hear everyone. I think that when we go back to school we will definitely get more work and have to work harder because we missed two weeks but it's important to stay home right now. I think what the government did was right because school is a very easy place where you can catch a virus and a lot of people who don't know have the virus and are spreading it. My family didn't stock up that much, they just went to get the necessary things so we won't have to go out for a little.

  24. I think that distance education can be a part of our future because as the years go on the more electronics and median evolves. I think the two weeks will make the school year much longer because we have to got o school for a certain amount of days so we will have to get those two weeks back during the summer. I dont think he acted too quick because its better to be safe than sorry but its still bad because some people arent listening to stay home and are just having fun with friends when this a important thing to worry abut. They arent taking it as serious as is. Yes my family did buy a lot of supplies but we dont have anymore tissues so thats a problem.

  25. I don't think that distance education will be the wave of the future for us.I think it mainly applies to sec 5, ceijep and universities. It's really only important for them to keep on track with what they're doing.I don't think that this will last 2 weeks, honestly there will probably no more school for the rest of the year.I don't know if we would have to redo the school year or just exlude term 3 from the year. The govournment did a great job at shutting down the schools. It was a good desision because the virus spreads easier with kids so the situation in quebec would definatly be worse if they didn't do this.My dad predicted this was going to happen so the sunday of march break he bought 2 giant bags of flour, toilet paper, eggs, caned food, etc...
